Purpose:

The Mass Spectrometry Core (MSC), Translational Metabolomics Shared Resource (TraM SR) is a newly established core at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center (MCWCC). This position seeks an exceptional and motivated PhD level research scientist to join our Mass Spectrometry Core at the MCWCC. This position will work with the TraM SR MSC team:

  1. to develop analytical methods and run samples to support research projects at the MCW.
  2. to maintenance and operate LC-MS and imaging MALDI MS instrument.
  3. to assist the Director of the MSC when needed.

Primary Functions:

  • Plan and complete the most complex procedures: participate in discovery projects.

  • Follow Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) to consistently perform sample preparation procedures for lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics, glycomics, and biologics characterization analysis.
  • Independently follow SOPs to conduct experiments in a timely manner, including upfront sample extraction, MS sample preparation, sample purification/fractionation and LC-MS operations.

  •  Effectively document fine details/incidents of experiments performed.
  • Optimize sample preparation workflow of biomolecules including lipids, small molecules, metabolites, complex glycans and proteins and lead research projects.
  • Build and develop MS workflow for lipidomics, metabolomics, glycomics and proteomics. 
  • Maintain and operate LC-MS and imaging MALDI-MS instruments; including maintenance of one or more instruments at the same time.
  • Routinely report, update, and communicate with the Director of MSC.
  • Review research methodologies; plan, develop and compose protocols for implementation, assessment, testing, cost effectiveness, and quality.
  • Plan and perform MS analyses using advanced techniques; determine and review findings with investigators and recommend experimental design and modifications in analytical protocols.
  • Prepare scientific reports, outcome findings and scientific manuscripts. Assist in outcome interpretation and composition of the results sections of manuscripts and reports.

  • Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data, develop methodologies, evaluate lab procedures.
  • Train students, residents and post-doctoral fellows in specific research protocols; develop training materials.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a computerized record system for reporting results. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, documentation, and records management. Solid understanding and knowledge of general chemistry and separation science. Mass Spectrometry experience. Experience with proteomic, lipidomics, metabolomics, or glycomics. Experience with LC-MS, Orbitrap, and MALDI-MS. Experience with MS software is preferred. Hands-on experience in HPLC, UHPLC and mass spectrometry. Experienced with handling various samples such as cell lysate, tissues, or any biological fluids. Proficiency on technical operating systems. Proven problem solving and troubleshooting abilities. Effective oral and technical written communication skills. Ability to work in both independent and collaborative environments. Time management and project management skills.

Preferred Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am. - 4:30pm.
Position Requirements: Specifications Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis. 
Minimum Required Education: PhD in a scientific field.
Minimum Required Experience: 4 years.
Preferred Experience: Experience with proteomic, lipidomics, metabolomics, or glycomics. Experience with LCMS, Orbitrap, and MALDI-MSField: Biochemistry, chemistry, analytical chemistry, or related field.
